I started Bridge Safety Consultants in 2003 in order to correct a problem. Safety meetings were a waste of time. Instead of providing important information that would help prevent injuries, they droned on, covering the same topics in the same boring way, with the workforce completely tuning out. At least half the time the presenter spoke only English, so the primarily Spanish-speaking workforce didn’t know what was being said anyway!
The most effective way to engage any audience Is to use humor, so I Interviewed Spanish-speaking comedians to find one who was smart enough, and interested enough to deliver safety meetings that workers actually paid attention to and enjoyed. That was the start of our company.
From there we expanded to delivering sexual harassment prevention trainings using the same idea; Engage the attendees with humor, help them understand not only the pitfalls and dangers of harassment, but how foolish it can be. Our trainers/comedians act out different scenarios to illustrate what not to do.
Our success in creating engaging training modules has inspired us to provide more important variations such as workplace violence, active shooter, and most recently unconscious bias, diversity, equity, and inclusion. We do all of them a little differently because our goal is to connect with the attendees and foster a greater understanding.
