A new California law (SB1343) requires that every company, even those with as few as 5 employees must provide comprehensive training on sexual harassment, abusive behavior, and sexual orientation before the end of 2019. The law requires employers to provide at least two hours of sexual harassment prevention training and education to all supervisory employees and at least one hour of such training to all non-supervisory employees. Training and education must be provided once every two years thereafter.
This law applies to all industries as none are immune from the possibility of sexual harassment. Torrance is a beautiful beach city in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. The top three industries of employment in Torrance are manufacturing, healthcare and retail. Researchers shows that women who work in restaurants and clothing stores tend to encounter more predatory behavior than those in other professions. Women working in industries with a high proportion of low-wage jobs, such as food service and agriculture, report higher incidences of sexual harassment.All business owners and managers, regardless of industry, must come into compliance with this new law, but it can be difficult to navigate all the requirements on your own.
Providing the right type of training is crucial for the legal safety of your company. In addition to prohibitions against sexual harassment, training should cover gender harassment, and harassment based on pregnancy, childbirth, breast-feeding and related medical conditions, as well as harassment based on all other characteristics listed above and under the law including gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. The training should also include prohibitions against abusive behavior and bullying.
